Silicone based lube is among the three major lubricants that are frequently used; the other two being water based lube and oil based lube. Because of the major praise silicone lube has been getting, there are a few questions that are asked over and over again from people seeking clarifications before purchasing the product. Some of the questions include;
The main ingredient of water based lubricant is water, while the main ingredient of silicone based is silicone, usually dimethicone.
Silicone based lubricant has the same feel as oil on the skin but is less sticky. Silicone based lube also feels lighter that oil based lubricant. However, it is more slippery compared to water based lubricant but also feels tacky.
Silicone based lube does not air dry and neither does it get absorbed into the skin. These properties allow it to stay put on the skin until it is washed off or rubbed off.
If you are thinking of trying out silicone based lube for the first time, it is imperative that you start out with a small amount for testing purpose. Get a small bottle or a sachet of silicone based lube and try it out a couple of time before getting a bigger bottle.
The ingredients within the silicone based lubricant make it costly to produce as opposed to water based lubricant. Costly production translates into higher prices. However, silicone lube makes it worth your investment as you only need a little amount at a time for an extended period of play unlike water based lube which requires constant reapplication.
Silicone based lube works great with both latex and non latex condoms. Some pre lubricated condoms have silicone lube in them, so in one way or another you may have already used silicone lube. The latex and silicone lube combination is so great that rubber enthusiasts sometimes use silicone lube to give their outfits that extra glistening shine.
Silicone based lubes differ depending on the manufacturer. Some lubricants are compatible with some silicone toys while others tend to degrade the silicone toys. However, for safety reasons we recommend that you avoid using silicone based lubricant with your silicone toys to be on the safe side. If your silicone toy has a guide listing the compatible silicone lubricants, stick to the lube on the list to avoid causing damage to your toy.
Toys that are designed to feel like the real usually contain silicone in their material composition. For this reason, silicone based lube is likely to degrade the material of the toy, causing irreversible damage to the toy. Avoid using silicone lube with your realistic feel toys.
Silicone based lube is water proof, making it impossible to just rinse away with water. Once on the skin, you can wash it off with soap and water. However, silicone based lube stains fabrics so always ensure to prevent spillage.
It is impossible to avoid spillage and staining 100% of the time. For this reason, there are a few steps that can be taken when you find yourself facing a silicone lube stain on your fabric. First, dab some more silicone lube onto the stain. You can do this even if it’s already dry, the silicone polymers will bind together. Leave the freshly-dabbed lube for half an hour.
As you wait for the stain to dry, prepare a 50/50 mixture of washing up liquid and household degreaser in a bowl. Sponge the mixture liberally onto the stain. Allow the stain to soak for 5 - 10 minutes and then rinse. If your fabric is quite thick then you may need to repeat step 2 again to remove the stain completely. Wash as usual.
